Roar Grøttvik has worked for the teachers' union movement, the last 30 years as an employee, since he started to work as a teacher in 1978 after finishing his university and teaching degree in Bergen, Norway. His subjects are Mathematics, Physics, History and English. He has worked as a teacher mainly in lower secondary education. In the union he has worked as a negotiator for wages and working conditions, as a research investigator, as a member of the secretariat leadership team, and for the last 12 years as a political adviser for the President and Vice-Presidents of Union of Education Norway. He has sat on Trade Union Advisory Committee to the OECD Working Group on Education, Training and Labour market issues since 1997. At the moment he is also memeber of the Steering committee of NORCAN - a union led action research program on Mathematics with schools from Alberta, Ontario and Norway.
