mproving education is high on the policy agenda in Scotland, with teacher professionalism, professional learning and leadership seen as key drivers in achieving this. This session will outline the educational landscape in Scotland, explore how the system is working collectively to bring coherence to professional learning and educational leadership and focus on the role that the Scottish College for Educational Leadership (SCEL) has on building leadership capacity at all levels in the system.
Since SCEL was established in September 2014, we have introduced a range of opportunities, programmes and support for teachers in Scotland, including:
• Development of the Framework for Educational Leadership, an on-line self-directed learning resource, supporting leadership development at all levels
• Design and delivery of a proto-type teacher leadership programme, co-constructed with the participating teachers
• Development of Into Headship, a new qualification for aspiring head teachers which will become mandatory for new head teachers from 2019, working in partnership with employers and universities
• A leadership pathway for head teachers, which includes middle leadership programmes and In Headship, a programme for new head teachers
• SCEL Fellowship programme, for experienced and credible head teachers, which awards SCEL Fellowship to successful participants
Participants attending the session will have the opportunity to hear about developments in Scotland, to engage in a question and answer session, and to compare and contrast practices with developments in their own provinces, states and countries.
